What Makes a Password Strong?

A strong password is long and random. Attackers do not sit and type guesses. Software tries billions of combinations, starting with common words, names, dates, and patterns like qwerty123. A password made of random characters has no pattern to find, so the only way to break it is to try every possible combination, and each extra character makes that job many times bigger.

How This Password Generator Works

The generator picks every character with the secure random number generator built into your browser. It does not use a simple formula that could be predicted. It also draws numbers in a fair way, so no character is more likely than another. If you switch on uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, it puts at least one of each into the password and then mixes them in a random order.

The strength meter. The meter estimates the bits of randomness: the length multiplied by the log base 2 of the number of possible characters. For example, 16 characters chosen from 85 possible characters is about 103 bits. The estimate fits passwords made by this tool. It does not fit a password you made up yourself.

Tips for Safer Passwords

Is It Safe to Use an Online Password Generator?

It is safe when the password is made on your own device. This tool runs in your browser. The password is not sent to a server or saved, and it disappears when you close or refresh the page. Still, use any password tool only on a device and browser you trust, and do not use it on a shared or public computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this password generator free?

Yes. BixTools is completely free. There is no signup and no limit on how many passwords you make.

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

This one makes the password inside your own browser using the secure random number generator built into it. The password is never sent to a server or saved. As with any password tool, use it on a device and browser you trust.

How long should my password be?

Use at least 12 to 16 characters for normal accounts. For important accounts such as email, banking, and your password manager, use 20 characters or more.

What makes a password strong?

Length and randomness. A long password made of random characters is very hard to guess. Names, birthdays, keyboard patterns, and common words are easy to guess, even with symbols added.

How does the strength meter work?

It estimates the bits of randomness: the length multiplied by log base 2 of the number of possible characters. More bits means a harder password to guess. It is an estimate that assumes the password is truly random, so it does not apply to a password you type yourself.

What does skip look-alike characters do?

It removes the characters that are easy to mix up when you read or type them: capital I, small l, the number 1, capital O, small o, and the number 0.

Are my passwords stored or sent anywhere?

No. Every password is made in your browser and disappears when you close or refresh the page. Nothing is uploaded or saved.

Can I use the same password on more than one site?

No. If one site is hacked, attackers try the same password on other sites. Use a different random password for every account and keep them in a password manager.

Why does every password include each type I choose?

Many sites require at least one uppercase letter, one number, and one symbol. The generator always puts at least one character of each type you switched on into the password, then fills the rest at random.

Do symbols make a password stronger?

A little, because they give more characters to choose from. Length adds much more strength than symbols do. If a site does not accept symbols, turn them off and make the password longer.
