What Is a YouTube Thumbnail?

A YouTube thumbnail is the small picture that represents a video in search results, on the home page, and in suggested videos. It is often the first thing a viewer sees, so many creators design it with care. People download thumbnails to study design ideas, save a reference for a project, create a video cover, or keep a picture of a video they liked.

YouTube Thumbnail Sizes Explained

YouTube keeps several copies of every thumbnail. This tool lets you choose any of them:

Tips for Thumbnail Creators

Using Thumbnails Responsibly

A thumbnail is the work of the video owner and is protected by copyright. Saving one for personal reference or study is normal. If you want to reuse it, for example in your own video, on a website, or in an advertisement, ask the owner for permission first. BixTools only helps you save pictures that YouTube already shows publicly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free?

Yes. BixTools is completely free. There is no signup, no watermark, and no limit on how many thumbnails you download.

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy the link of the video and paste it into the box above. The thumbnail appears right away. Choose the quality you want, then click Download.

Which YouTube links work?

Normal watch links, short youtu.be links, Shorts, live streams, embed links, and YouTube Music links all work. You can also paste just the 11 character video ID.

Which thumbnail size should I choose?

Choose Max resolution (1280 x 720) for the best quality. It is the full 16:9 picture with no black bars.

Why is the max resolution thumbnail not available?

Some videos, especially older or low resolution ones, never got an HD thumbnail. In that case, the tool shows the next best size for you.

Why do some thumbnails have black bars?

The Standard, High quality, and Small sizes use a 4:3 shape, so a 16:9 picture gets black bars at the top and bottom. Max resolution and Medium are full 16:9 with no bars.

Can I download a thumbnail as PNG or WebP?

Yes. YouTube provides thumbnails as JPG. Choose PNG or WebP above the picture, and your browser converts the image for you before it downloads.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a Shorts link and the thumbnail appears like it does for any other video.

Can I use a downloaded thumbnail?

Thumbnails belong to the video owner. Saving one for personal reference is fine, but you need permission from the owner before you reuse it, for example in your own video or on a website.

Do you store my links or images?

No. We do not store the links you paste or the thumbnails you download. The pictures load straight from YouTube's image servers to your browser.
