How Does the Word and Character Counter Work?
Whether you are writing a college essay with a strict word cap, crafting a Google meta description, or preparing a YouTube script, keeping track of length matters. As you type or paste text into the editor, this tool splits your writing into words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in real time. Words connected by hyphens or apostrophes (such as state-of-the-art or you're) count as one word, matching the behavior of Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
Standard Character & Word Limits for SEO and Social Media
- Google Page Title (Title Tag): Aim for 50 to 60 characters so your title does not get cut off in search results.
- Google Meta Description: Keep it between 140 and 155 characters for a complete snippet on both desktop and mobile.
- Instagram Bio & Captions: An Instagram bio allows up to 150 characters, while post and Reel captions allow up to 2,200 characters (the first 125 characters appear before the "more" button).
- X (Twitter) Post: Standard posts allow up to 280 characters.
- LinkedIn Post: Up to 3,000 characters (about 450 to 500 words).
- Blog Posts & Articles: Standard informational guides usually range from 800 to 1,800 words depending on how deep the topic goes.
How Reading Time and Speaking Time Are Calculated
Studies show that the average adult reads English prose silently at about 225 words per minute (wpm). When speaking aloud for a presentation, podcast, or video voiceover, people speak more slowly—around 130 words per minute—to leave room for pauses and clear pronunciation. Based on that pace, a 1-minute speech is roughly 130 words, a 5-minute speech is about 650 words, and a 10-minute YouTube video script is around 1,300 words.
Using Keyword Density to Improve Your Writing
The keyword table at the bottom of the tool shows which words appear most often in your draft. For clear, natural writing—and healthy search engine optimization—your main topic words should appear naturally without being repeated in every sentence. If a single word makes up more than 3% to 4% of a long article, consider replacing a few repetitions with synonyms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this word counter free?
Yes. BixTools Word Counter is 100% free with no signup, no ads blocking your text, and no limit on how many documents you check.
Does it count characters with and without spaces?
Yes. The top cards display both total characters (including spaces) and characters without spaces at the same time.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on an average silent reading speed of 225 words per minute for adults. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which is the natural pace for presentations, speeches, and YouTube voiceovers.
How does the keyword density table work?
As you type, the tool counts how often each word appears and calculates its share of your total word count. By default, common filler words like 'the', 'and', and 'is' are filtered out so you see your real topic keywords, and you can toggle them on anytime.
Do hyphenated words count as one word or two?
Words joined by a hyphen or apostrophe—such as 'well-known' or 'don't'—are counted as a single word, matching Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
What are the character limits for Google SEO and social media?
Google typically shows up to 60 characters for a page title and 155 to 160 characters for a meta description. X (Twitter) allows 280 characters for a standard post, and an Instagram bio allows 150 characters.
Can I change my text between uppercase, lowercase, and title case here?
Yes. Use the quick buttons right below the text box to convert your text to Sentence case, Title Case, UPPERCASE, or lowercase, or to clean up extra double spaces.
Can I open a .txt file from my computer or phone?
Yes. Click Load .txt file to pick a plain text file from your device, and its contents will load straight into the editor without being uploaded to any server.
Does it work with emojis and non-English languages?
Yes. The counter uses Unicode-aware character segmentation so emojis and international scripts are counted accurately.
Is the text I type or paste saved anywhere?
No. All counting and text analysis happens locally inside your web browser. Your writing is never uploaded, stored, or shared.
